Join the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) Victorian division for a conversation with Dr Andreas Fouras, founder and CEO of ASX-listed medtech company 4DMedical, and Dr Kate Cornick, CEO of the Tech Council of Australia, as they share what it takes to build a global company from university research and what needs to change to help more Australian innovations get there.

Dr Andreas Fouras is an internationally recognised leader in medical technology and innovation, a reputation gained over a successful career that has cut across both academic research and the development of innovative medtech that is now delivering real-world clinical impact.
Upon completing his master’s course and attaining a PhD, Andreas had a short but successful career in academic research. Andreas held the positions of Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Director of the Laboratory for Dynamic Imaging at Monash University, where he led groundbreaking work in imaging, fluid dynamics and mechanobiology.

Andreas then entered the business world. He founded 4DMedical in December 2012, which subsequently listed on the ASX in August 2020 (ASX:4DX), and is now an S&P/ASX 200 company. He is today the company’s CEO and CTO.
Under Andreas’ leadership, 4DMedical developed CT:VQ™, the first and only FDA-approved technology that enables clinicians to image and quantify lung ventilation and perfusion without contrast media.

Andreas continues to leverage his experience at the intersection of developing and commercialising breakthrough solutions in respiratory medicine to generate a global impact on healthcare. This work is ensuring patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems benefit from diagnostic technologies that are more sensitive, less invasive and more accessible to wider populations.

Kate is a passionate technology and innovation leader, with experience working across startups, corporate, academia and government.

Kate started her role as the CEO of the Tech Council in May 2026. She was previously the CEO of LaunchVic, Victoria’s lead startup agency. Under her leadership LaunchVic has supported over 13,000 entrepreneurs to upskill, 2,200 startups to grow, helped launched 16 venture capital funds and 11 angel networks unlocked over $1b private capital and supported tens of accelerator programs across Victoria.

Passionate about diversity, equity and inclusion, Kate is the founding CEO and Investment Committee Member of the Alice Anderson Fund – a fund led by LaunchVic dedicated to supporting women founders. To date the fund has made over 45 investments into women-led startups.
Kate is the Deputy Chancellor and Council Member of Charles Sturt University, and Chair of the Investment Committee for the University of Melbourne’s Genesis Pre Seed Fund.

In 2024 Kate was selected by the Federal Government to be a Panel Member for the Strategic Examination of R&D – a once in a generation review of the national R&D system. The Panel handed its report to Government in December 2025.

Kate previously founded a human resources technology startup and led it through an ASX listing. She was also the Senior Telecommunications Adviser and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and worked as a General Manager at NBN Co.

Kate has a PhD in optical telecommunications from the University of Melbourne.
